Basements can be a great alternative for providing extra living space where the choice of options to extend your property are limited. You may face restrictions like living in an area of outstanding natural beauty or living in the Green Belt, or you may just love the external features of your property and do not wish them to change. A basement could be the win-win choice for adding that space that you require without changing the external view or appearance of your property.
Due to the very nature of the work it's rarely the cheapest option of gaining space but there's definitely something of a ‘wow factor’ about having that space below ground. Whether it be a gym, swimming pool, games or cinema room, or a play room for the children it's an impressive addition to any property. If you look at our gallery pictures you'll see we built a basement beneath the property at 8a Castle Mead, Boxmoor. In the basement was a gym, cinema room a play room and a large shower/bathroom all with underfloor heating. The construction method we used was a polystyrene block called the BECO system. These were 1000mm long x 250mm thick reinforced and concrete filled. Polystyrene is not only a natural water repellent, but the blocks themselves have a very low U Value (a calculation used to measure heat loss). On top of this we used two separate forms of external tanking to ensure the prevention of water ingress.
Your basement, if built correctly with up to date materials, will have an ambient temperature all year round; warm in the winter, cool in the summer. Because of this, when you choose to heat it not only does it retain the heat well but the rest of the house benefits form the rising heat from it.
